My real passion for health food and raw food began in 2010 when I was privileged enough to spend 6 months in the USA.

I completed the three week Life Change Program that taught a holistic approach to health, wellness and the healing power of plant-based foods. With early morning meditations and yoga sessions followed by wheatgrass shots, talks, therapies and healing on various levels, my journey began as my mind was opened to the glory and splendor of raw food and the beauty of fruits and vegetables in their natural form.

As my passion grew, I felt I needed to fine-tune my culinary skills and attended Matthew Kenney Academy in Oklahoma. I had the time of my life as I perfected recipes that are fresh, unique, tasty and healthy.Surrounded by the love and support of remarkable family, friends, mentors, teachers and loyal and committed staff, we are set for a long career of changing people’s lives, one meal at a time!
Surrounded by nature, Leafy Greens is a rawfood, vegan-friendly cafe serving plant-based cuisine. Providing the perfect space to relax in a warm, rustic and welcoming setting, you’ll be nourished inside and out.

Sharing the premises with the well-known Casalinga Restaurant, in Johannesburg we designed our menu around what is in our garden, what is seasonal and locally available to ensure that our food is sustainable and has the smallest carbon footprint; food that is in its purest natural form, high in trace minerals, bio-available proteins and iron and vitamins.

My grandmother, Marguerite was born in Johannesburg and married my grandfather, Aldo De Luca and were blessed with 4 children, all gifted in their own right and all passionate about food. Born into a family truly inspired by food, the way it grows, the seed and the soil has been passed down from generation to generation.

The Players, a family of go-getters and hard workers, all South African born, now scattered across the globe, have all been inspired by fitness, health, good clean food and family and have inspired Antonia throughout her life.

Back on my farm in Muldersdrift, I started a golf driving range and a vegetable garden; I was always growing vegetables at home.Jenny and I entertained a lot, we had dinners at home, we loved to cook and entertain. Our friends encouraged us to open a restaurant too. We called it Casalinga. Meaning Housewife or home made.

I then designed and built the restaurant myself. It was completely sustainable; Casalinga had all local, rustic and homely décor and ambiance to it, it just worked. My mother, Margarita helped us with our menus, recipes and teaching our chefs to make all sorts of traditional Italian dishes. We began expanding the vegetable garden to furnish Casalinga's fresh produce needs.

As Casalinga grew, the hours became longer and the work became more strenuous. I had to conserve my energy, I was tired so I drank coffee and whisky at night to stay awake and stay motivated. We ate a lot too; we tasted everything. We ate on the go, often eating too many refined carbohydrates and as a result my energy levels and my health began to deteriorate. I got sick. After changing my lifestyle through fasting, eating raw and juicing with the guidance of Mary Ann Shearer from The Natural Way my life and health improved to the point where I had healed my ulcer, lost weight and felt absolutely fantastic.

I decided to become vegetarian and that led to veganism and later on, mainly a raw food diet. I stopped drinking and smoking and I instantly felt better, healthier and lighter. Food consciousness is about having an awareness of the body and how it thrives, and the main causes of disease and illness.

My daughter Antonia came up with the great idea of opening Leafy Greens and together we opened the cafe doors in June 2010. My health journey continues. Our path has been an interesting one, I am grateful for my health, my family and my business. I wish my daughter the greatest of luck. May this inspire many readers to plant their own garden.
